The Bar Council of India (BCI) has issued a powerful directive to all State Bar Councils, urging them to submit detailed verification reports of law degrees held by practicing advocates. This comes amid growing concerns about the rise of fake, forged, and dubious LL.B. degrees being used to enter the legal profession.
The BCI’s Directive: A Step Toward Cleansing the Legal System
In a circular dated March 2025, the BCI emphasized the need for:
Immediate and thorough verification of all LL.B. degrees
Submission of verification status reports by each State Bar Council
Disciplinary action against non-compliant advocates
Debarment and cancellation of enrollment for those found with fraudulent qualifications
Why This Matters
The credibility of the legal system is built on the integrity of its practitioners. Fake law degrees undermine the justice system, allowing unqualified individuals to practice law, mislead clients, and misuse court processes.
“The legal profession must be guarded against imposters. Verification of law degrees is no longer optional—it is a necessity.”
— Bar Council of India (BCI)
The Problem is Widespread
At Education Fraud Check, we’ve uncovered over 100+ cases of advocates with fake or forged LL.B. degrees, many enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi. Our ongoing investigation shows alarming trends:
Degrees issued from blacklisted universities
Enrollments based on fake mark sheets
Roll numbers that don’t match university records
BCI’s Warning to Advocates
The BCI has clearly stated that failure to cooperate with the verification process may result in suspension of license and disciplinary inquiry. Those found guilty of forging documents will face criminal prosecution, in addition to being debarred.
Education Fraud Check Welcomes the Move
This nationwide verification drive is a much-needed move to uphold the sanctity of legal education. We urge:
All law graduates to verify their credentials proactively
Clients to ask for Bar Council enrollment numbers and university verification
State Bar Councils to act transparently and report publicly
