The Truth About Fake Backdated Degrees: A Risk Not Worth Taking

In a concerning incident, an ex-serviceman named Rakesh Kumar secured a Junior Engineer (Electrical) position at Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) by submitting a fraudulent degree certificate. The deception was uncovered during routine verification, leading to criminal charges against him.

The Deceptive Act

Rakesh Kumar, hailing from Sundernagar in Mandi district, was appointed through the Ex-Servicemen Employment Cell in Hamirpur for a position reserved for Ex-Servicemen (SC) candidates. He officially joined HPPCL on January 31, 2023. However, suspicions arose regarding the authenticity of his educational qualifications.

Verification and Exposure

HPPCL reached out to Maharaja Agrasen Himalayan Garhwal University in Uttarakhand to verify Kumar’s diploma in Electrical Engineering. The university’s Registrar confirmed that Kumar had not completed the program, revealing the submitted documents as forged.

Legal Repercussions

Following a complaint by Jitendra Thakur, Vigilance Officer at HPPCL, a case was registered at New Shimla Police Station. Superintendent of Police Shimla, Sanjeev Gandhi, stated that an investigation is underway, with charges filed under sections 420, 467, 468, and 471 of the Indian Penal Code, addressing cheating and forgery offenses.
