UGC Warns Students and Parents: Avoid Admission to Sangai International University, Manipur

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially removed Sangai International University, Churachandpur, Manipur, from its list of recognized universities under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.

Sangai International University is no more a University.

This decision comes after the university repeatedly failed to provide the required information for inspection despite multiple requests over several years.

In a public notice, the UGC has declared that degrees issued or awarded by Sangai International University will not be recognized or valid for higher education or employment unless approved by the UGC.

Background of the Issue

  • Sangai International University was established as a State Private University by the Government of Manipur and was included in the UGC’s list of recognized universities in June 2015. However, despite multiple official communications from the UGC dated 03.07.2015, 12.08.2015, 21.10.2016, 01.03.2019, and 11.01.2021, the university failed to submit the necessary documents for inspection.

Due to this continued non-compliance, the UGC issued a Show Cause Notice (F. No. 8-19/2015 (CPP-I/PU)) on 19.12.2023, demanding an explanation for why the university should not be delisted. The notice was also forwarded to the Department of Higher Education, Government of Manipur, requesting immediate action and comments.

To date, neither Sangai International University nor the Government of Manipur has responded to the UGC’s notice. As a result, the UGC has officially delisted Sangai International University, prohibiting it from offering UGC-approved undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral programs.
