Chhattisgarh: tenth arrest in alleged fake marksheet racket behind anganwadi helper appointments
Balrampur police have arrested a man who had been absconding in a case over anganwadi helper jobs allegedly obtained with forged marksheets, taking arrests to 10.

Police in Balrampur district, Chhattisgarh, have arrested a 33-year-old man accused of involvement in an alleged racket in which anganwadi helper posts in Shankargarh block were obtained using forged and fake marksheets, Amar Ujala and CGKhabar reported on 19 and 21 October 2026. With his arrest on 18 October, the number of people arrested in the case has reached 10.
The accused, a resident of Bhairopur village under Chalgali police station, had been absconding since the case came to light and has been sent to judicial remand, according to both reports.
How the case began
The investigation began with a written complaint filed at Shankargarh police station in August 2025 by the officer in charge of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) project in Kusmi. Amar Ujala dates the complaint to 23 August 2025. The complaint alleged that appointments of anganwadi helpers had been secured with forged and fake documents through an organised network.
Police registered the case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita covering cheating, forgery, use of forged documents, criminal conspiracy and organised crime, CGKhabar reported. Nine people were arrested in phases between 24 and 26 August 2025 and sent to judicial remand. Police have described them as accused of preparing fake documents and marksheets or taking part in the conspiracy. All remain accused; no court has ruled on the charges.
Small posts, real stakes
Anganwadi workers and helpers run village childcare and nutrition centres under the ICDS scheme. The posts are filled locally, often on the basis of school marksheets, which makes them attractive targets for document fraud and means a fraudulent appointment displaces an eligible local candidate.
Verifying school marksheets
Recruiting departments can check Class 10 and 12 results directly with the issuing board, many of which provide online result verification, and DigiLocker carries board-issued marksheets for several boards. Comparing roll numbers, year of passing and dates of birth against board records at the time of appointment, rather than after a complaint, is the most reliable safeguard.
