Government to Close Fake Universities and Shutdown self style institution

12 fake universities closed in 10 years, govt issues show cause notices to unauthorised institutes

Since 2014, the Indian government has taken decisive action against unauthorized institutions by closing 12 fake universities. These institutions were found to be awarding illegitimate degrees, compromising the integrity of the nation’s education system. In addition to shutting down these entities, the government has lodged First Information Reports (FIRs) and issued show-cause or warning notices to other unauthorized institutes involved in similar fraudulent activities

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) plays a pivotal role in identifying and acting against such institutions. As of August 2022, the UGC has declared 21 self-styled, unrecognized institutions as fake universities, emphasizing that they are not entitled to confer any degree.

These measures underscore the government’s commitment to upholding the quality and credibility of higher education in India. Students are advised to verify the recognition status of universities and colleges before enrolling to ensure they receive valid and recognized qualifications.
